Letter from Army to Egyptian Newspapers: Not to Publish Any Content About the Military

On February 22, Gen. Ismail Etman, head of the Morale Affairs Directorate of the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces, sent a letter to editors of Egyptian newspapers telling them "not to publish any articles/news/press releases/complaints/advertising/pictures concerning the armed forces or the leadership of the armed forces, except after consulting the Morale Affairs directorate and the Military Intelligence since these are the competent parties to examine such issues to protect the safety of the nation." Human Rights Watch has seen a photocopy of this letter and confirmed its authenticity.

what is wrong with that? the Army has it's right to maintain its confidentiality and control any statement that mention its official body. it is an army and has to be considered as Army not a person!

I'm sorry, this is not a question of confidentiality, it's a question of censorship, prior restraint of media and an inability to be held publicly accountable

and how about the Pril ad with the soldier holding Pril on top of a tank, that's what is ok. The marriage of the army, the symbol of Egypt at the moment and dishwashing liquid is so not right

Not to mention that it is now a ruling body that has to be accountable to its people. This is not an internal affair, this is an issue that concerns (independent) media which belongs to us all,we have a right to know everything, not what the army deems 'safe' and necessary. Especially if as mentioned by Ismail Etman and Co, bloggers and protestors represent a danger to the army and nation and thus get military trials, whereas previous rulers and murderers get a civilian trial as they don't threaten the army and people. This warped logic of what is dangerous and what isn't can't be applied to the media.
